SEARCH & DISCOVERY

SEO, AEO and GEO: what actually changes?

Understand how search engine optimization, answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization connect—and what to prioritize on your website.

Three labels, one useful foundation

SEO focuses on helping people discover your website through search engines. AEO is commonly used for making content useful in direct answers. GEO describes efforts to improve visibility in generative responses. These labels overlap, and different platforms handle discovery and citations differently.

For a business website, the useful starting point is the same: explain what you do, who it is for and how it helps. Give important services their own pages and answer real customer questions with specific, accurate information.

Start with pages that deserve to be found

A single sentence about every service on a homepage gives a potential customer very little to evaluate. A focused service page can explain the problem, the scope of the work, who it suits and what happens next.

Before creating another article, review your existing commercial pages. Can a visitor understand the offer without contacting you? Are the claims supported? Is there a relevant next step? Improve those answers before increasing the amount of content.

Keep the technical foundations clear

Google’s guidance says its existing SEO practices remain relevant to AI features. There is no special AI markup required to appear in those features. A page must meet the relevant indexing and snippet requirements, and inclusion is not guaranteed.

Use crawlable links, descriptive page titles and consistent URLs. Keep important information available as text, and ensure structured data matches the visible page. These are practical foundations, not a promise of rankings or citations.

Write answers that help someone decide

Start with the direct answer, then explain the circumstances that might change it. For example, “Can you improve an existing Shopify theme?” deserves an answer about reviewing the theme and scope, not a paragraph repeating “Shopify development agency.”

Use examples from real work when you have permission and evidence. Explain limitations. Avoid invented statistics, anonymous testimonials or claims that sound authoritative but cannot be checked.

Measure the business journey

Agree on what a useful enquiry or sale looks like before collecting more reporting. Review which pages bring relevant visitors, which questions appear repeatedly in sales conversations and where visitors struggle to take the next step.

Treat AI mentions as one signal among several. Sustainable organic work should make the website more useful even when a particular search interface changes.
